STRATEGIC WORMING PLAN. FALL WORMING OR FECAL.
The larval worm parasites that were picked up on the spring grass molt to adults in 6 months which is now. After October 15, we can do a fecal to check the parasite load. If there are a lot of eggs, we worm with pyrantel/ Strongid paste. If there are few to no eggs we do not worm. The next worming will be April 15 for the spring worm hatch using ivermectin or Quest.
If you have not wormed your babies, it is time to do so. Worm them with Panacur using the foal dose or use double the dose of safe-guard (Febendazole). Worm again in 1 month. It is also time to start the foal vaccinations (EWT/West Nile or Core). The foal will need to be boostered in one month.
CBD
CBD is a compound from the Cannabis plant in which there are 2 types. One is Hemp which is used for its fiber products in making textiles, building materials, ropes, paper, cat litter, cosmetics, food and industrial products. Hemp has CBD but little to no THC. The other is marijuana which has CBD and THC (the mind-altering compound). In the 2018 farm bill it became legal to grow industrial hemp, making it available in all states. You can purchase CBD on the internet or at your local CBD store. The FDA has no quality control standards on CBD or any other oral supplements. (FDA is only on prescription drugs). A reputable company will publish a certificate of analysis on its website verifying that it has paid to have their products tested. The COA Certificate of Analysis lists everything in the product and the amounts such as cannabinoids CBD, terpenes, other beneficial plant compounds, solvents & heavy metals.
CBD can relieve anxiety, reduce inflammation, and provide pain relief. It is used to treat epilepsy by preventing seizures. CBD can cause a positive drug test. It is in effect in 2 hours and after 3 days of daily dose it maintains a steady blood level state.
In horses, CBD can control chronic pain. CBD has a calming effect in humans, but has not been proven to do so in horses. Anecdotal reports from owners and vets state it helps calm the horse. CBD comes in pellets, powder, or oil form for horses which can be found on the internet. Some of the local CBD stores can order it for your horse. The dose is 25mg /day for 1 week. If there is no response, increase the dose to 50mg. For pain the dose can go as high as 200mg/day then decrease after 1 month.
STRESS In HORSES / ULCERS
Stress causes ulcers in people and horses and can cause colic in horses.
Causes of stress in horses include:
1. Change of location, routine, or diet, limited forage (hay or pasture), inconsistent
feeding schedule.
2. Stall confinement, minimal exercise, limited turn out, separation from horses or
people, boredom.
3. Thunder storms, fireworks, buzzing insects.
4. Training, busy competition schedules, trailering.
5. Vet or farrier exams, injury, chronic pain.
Signs of ulcers are grinding teeth, off feed, cinchy with the girth, bucking, mild colic repeated at feeding time, history of stress.
Ulcer diagnosis is by an endoscopic exam of the stomach, clinical signs, stress history, and response to treatment.
Treatment is with Ulcergard or Gastrogard paste on an empty stomach, sucralfate, alfalfa and lots of forage.
Prevention is with U Guard or NeighLox in the feed, Gut X on an empty stomach, free choice forage, and reduced stress causes. It is unproven, but CBD may decrease anxiety.
